I’m the proud co-founder of nonprofit organization Girls Lead Summit, a peer-to-peer mentorship program for girls 8-14 years old. We give young leaders a platform to teach workshops in a wide variety of disciplines from engineering to art. The vision behind the organization is to help young women unveil their inner power and in turn help shape a new generation of female leaders who support one another.
During the start of the pandemic, we pivoted our programming efforts and created the Sheroes of Love Virtual Challenge, which met nationally and internationally via Zoom. Sheroes’ mission is to spread love, kindness, hope, and joy. Now more than ever, we wanted to remind girls everywhere that they have the power to make a difference in their community and the world. We posted mini-missions every week via our Instagram, email, and other platforms, and girls had the opportunity to activate a unique superpower to complete each mission. Each of our participants also committed to the Sheroes of Love ‘Pledge’, which we recited together at the end of each workshop.
This unique virtual challenge even inspired my co-founder Natalia Ruiz and I to write a bilingual book about the intergalactic quest of a 12-year old girl named Mimi who travels from planet to planet and unlocks her natural superpowers like integrity, kindness, gratitude, and self-love. Some of the illustrations in the book, including the cover art, were created by one of the virtual challenge leaders, Veronica Marin-Estrada.
